Choose The Right Irons For Your Game and Swing

The best players know that the secret to a lower handicap comes from being a better iron player. Better iron shots mean shorter putts, and shorter putts lead to more pars and birdies.

Choose the right irons for your style of gameplay Choose a set of irons that will enhance your game, avoiding those that are too stiff or above your style of game play.  You don't have to be Tiger Woods, there's a set of irons that's just right for any level of player ability.  It can't be emphasized enough, the most basic and essential part of every golfers game is their iron play. The iron is truly the staple of your bag and your ability to control and shape your iron shots will define your game. It is the link between the drive and the green, and without strong iron play, the rest simply falls apart.

It's certainly an advantage to be able to drive the ball 300+ yards, but unless you can find the greens from your positions, those drives are a waste of effort. You know what they say, "Drive for Show, Putt for Dough!" and the only way to get to the green in the fewest strokes is with a proper set of irons.

Irons make up 60-70% of the clubs in our bags, so finding a type that's right for you can make a considerable improvement in your game. There's quite a variety of specifications for irons offered these days. Your type of swing, style, and level of ability can and should be factored in to the type of irons you decide on. The primary characteristics to look for in a set of irons are stiffness, forgiveness, distance, and workability. Probably, in that order for most players.

Higher handicap players should look for a set of irons that are more forgiving. These types of irons are generally less stiff (REG,SENIOR or LADIES), usually have a larger "sweet spot", and always forgive small swing errors with less of a tendency to slice the ball. On the other hand, low handicap players will gladly trade forgiveness for distance and workability. These types of irons are nearly always firm or super firm with a smaller sweet spot, having a much less forgiving nature. Workability allows for the intentional hook or pushing of a shot much like comparing a fastball pitcher to a curve ball pitcher.  An example would be shooting around a tree rather than through or over it.
